The sort of dim sum served in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia originated in Hong Kong during the 1950s. Siu mai are so popular, in fact, that they are one of the few dim sum dishes to have made the transition from afternoon delicacy to street food snack.

Answer 1 of 33: Hi, Followed many discussions on Dim Sum....I am not enquiring where the best Dim Sum restaurants are, or where are the dearest or the cheapest. Ah, dim sum. As with most small plates dining, the more people you have and the more dishes you order, the better the experience will be for everyone. I would recommend for a couple, order 5 dim sum and a dessert, with good chinese tea is a very nice experience.

Most locals will also add a plate of vegetable, and fried rice/noodle, or congee on top of these dim sum dishes to complete a filling lunch. Most Hong Kong street food stalls sell them, usually served several in a plastic tray with a liberal dousing of soy sauce and chili oil for good measure.
