by Giovanni BELLINI This altarpiece representing the Madonna with the Child, Saints and Angels was executed for the church of San Giobbe in Venice, originally over the second altar on the right of the church, completing, in an illusory way, with its own spatiality, the Lombardian architectural plan. With the financial support of Doge Cristoforo Moro, the present church was constructed between 1450 and 1493. In the San Giobbe Altarpiece, Bellini used the angle of the church's own windows as the source for his light, further adding to the painting's realism and the illusion that it is an actual extension of the church. The work can be seen as an example of Sacra conversazione (Holy Conversation), where Mary is sitting on a tall marble throne, and she's holding the Child. The San Giobbe church itself was begun in 1378 as a hospice with an attached oratory run by the Confraternity of St. Job. The San Giobbe Altarpiece was housed in the Church of San Giobbe in Venice between its completion around 1480 and 1797. The San Giobbe Altarpiece is an oil painting that was executed in 1487 by Giovanni Bellini, an Italian Renaissance master, now in the Venice-based museum gallery called Gallerie dell'Accademia.
