Tonkatsu is another Japanese gastronomy fast becoming a global favorite! It also includes more than 10 kinds of spices along with soy sauce, vinegar, and sugar.

The ketchup base is a great canvas, and the worcestershire sauce adds a very *zingy* taste to it. Tonkatsu Sauce mainly consists of vegetables and fruits such as tomatoes, prunes, dates, apples, lemon juice, carrots, onions, and celery. While the sauce has its origins in English Worcestershire sauce, the flavor was changed to better suit the taste of the Japanese people, and it became its own original Japanese condiment, with a special sweetness and full-bodied flavor, sourness, and thickness. Tonkatsu is often served with shredded cabbage but we like it much better with broccoli slaw or coleslaw. Wow, what an EPIC taste test! i recently started trying to make my own tonkatsu sauce after really hating the kikkoman brand. An easy way to think about sauce is that it’s kinda like a Japanese Worcestershire sauce. Tonkatsu sauce is crafted by stewing vegetables and fruits, then mixing in vinegar and sugar, salt, and spices. a combo of ketchup, spicy mustard, vinegar and Worcestershire sauce tasted a lot better than Kikkoman. It’s a lot of work to make it from scratch, but you can definitely make a simplified version that tastes just as good to go with your homemade tonkatsu. good job!

The sauce is not difficult to create and it is open to a lot of variations, so next time instead of using a dubious (cheap) product make your own! The tonkatsu is not that difficult to achieve, but too often disappointment comes with the wrong choice of sauce or simply not realizing that the sauce is half of the recipe!.

Ketchup, butter, worcestershire sauce (can’t pronounce it, but I THINK I spelled it right, haha), soy sauce, and a little bit of garlic powder. This dish is super easy to make, delicious and satisfying.

This homemade sauce is tangy and delicious. Like, kind of tangy, kind of a hint of spicy… and the soy sauce brings a little oomph of umami. It was at this point that I vowed never go without my tonkatsu sauce ever again and decided to learn how to make it.
For what tastes like a rather complex sauce, it's very simple to put together. Tonkatsu sauce is part of a triumvirate of Japanese style sauces, unsurprisingly called ‘sauce’ (ソース) – [pronounced so-su]. Tonkatsu is a Japanese dish which consists of a pork cutlet coated in Panko (Japanese bread crumbs) fried, then topped with Tonkatsu sauce.
